Although the ingredients of homemade perfumes are different than those used in packaged perfumes, the general perfume-making process is the same in both cases. Try the sample recipe below, or experiment with your own creations. Here are some general instructions on how to make your own perfumes:

Guidelines

  •
  • Boil containers in hot water to ensure they are as sterile as possible. Then dry thoroughly.
  •
  • Store essential and fragrance orders in a cool dry place: heat can alter composition.
  •
  • When a perfume changes color or scent it is old and should be discarded.
  •
  • All perfume blends should be tested for skin sensitivity. Place a drop on the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours to ensure that no reaction occurs.
  •
  • Do not place essential or fragrance oils directly on your skin. Always dilute with sweet almond or oil first.
  •
  • Label and date everything.
  •
  • Never use metal instruments, as they may react with your perfume and alter its composition.
  •
  • If glycerin is called for in a recipe, blend it with water so air bubbles do not occur.
  •
  • If you want to place flowers in your fragrance for decoration, make sure they are chemical free.

    oranges

    Mint

    Lemons

    Ingredients

  •
  • Hungary Water
  •
  • 1 lemon or orange
  •
  • 1 cup orange flower
  •
  • 1 cup Vodka
  •
  • 1/2 teaspoon essential oil of lemon
  •
  • 2 teaspoons essential oil of bergamot
  •
  • 1/2 teaspoon essential oil of rosemary
  •
  • 2 tablespoons fresh peppermint leaf cut into small pieces (use 1 tablespoon if peppermint is dried)
  •
  • 1 teaspoon glycerin

    Directions

Sterilize a glass container. From the lemon or orange, cut a single strip that’s long enough to fit into the bottom of the glass container. Blend the orange flower water and glycerin. Add vodka to the orange flower combination, then add the essential oils and peppermint. Cap the glass container tightly and place in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks (the longer the better). Decant the Hungary Water into a perfume bottle using a coffee filter, and add the other combined ingredients.
